China Eastern Airlines Corp Ltd: Passenger Traffic Hits Record High During May Day Holiday

China Eastern Airlines Corp Ltd, a leading airline service provider based in Shanghai, China, reported a significant increase in passenger traffic during the recent May Day holiday. The company, which operates globally, offers a range of services including passenger transport, air freight, and in-flight catering. The data indicates that the airline’s performance during this period was notably strong, with passenger numbers reaching a new historical high for the same period.

According to Flight Master data, the average price for domestic economy class tickets during the May Day holiday was approximately 779 yuan, marking a 0.4% increase compared to the same period in 2019 and a 5.3% rise from the previous year. The daily passenger volume for the holiday reached about 222.9 million, an 11.8% increase year-over-year, with domestic travelers accounting for an 8.9% rise.

Experts attribute the rise in ticket prices to an increased proportion of long-haul and trunk routes. These routes typically command higher prices due to greater demand. Shanghai, a major hub for China Eastern Airlines, saw significant growth in both passenger numbers and capacity. The Shanghai airports handled a record number of flights and passengers during the holiday, with a 6.2% increase in flight volume and a 14.1% rise in daily passenger flow.

China Eastern Airlines itself reported a record high in passenger transport during the holiday, with a 19.8% increase in flight capacity and a 16.1% rise in transported passengers. The airline operated 1,520 flights, including 1,305 domestic and 209 international or regional flights. Additionally, the airline’s ten domestically produced C919 aircraft executed 182 flights, transporting 26,470 passengers.

Other airlines, such as Southern Airlines, also reported increases in flight operations and passenger numbers at major Shanghai airports, with a 7.48% rise in flights and a 3.7% increase in passengers.

The tourism and hospitality sectors also experienced significant growth during the holiday. Xiangyuan Tourism reported a 112.9% increase in tourist numbers and a 100.71% rise in revenue. Similarly, Songcheng Entertainment saw record-breaking visitor numbers and revenue across its 12 major historical and cultural sites.

Overall, the data reflects a robust performance across various sectors, with China Eastern Airlines playing a significant role in the increased passenger traffic during the May Day holiday. The airline’s strategic focus on key routes and capacity management contributed to its strong performance during this peak travel period.
