ING Groep NV Expands Lending Portfolio Amidst AI‑Related Market Dynamics
Dutch lender ING Groep NV announced a €128.5 million loan program targeted at small and mid‑sized enterprises in the Netherlands. The initiative, unveiled on 6 November 2026, is part of the bank’s ongoing strategy to support domestic business growth.
Simultaneously, ING has put a portfolio of approximately US$500 million in data‑center loans up for sale. The portfolio includes loans for the Stargate site and other infrastructure projects. The move follows a broader industry conversation about the concentration of credit exposure to data‑center assets, as noted by the European Central Bank (ECB), which is considering a review of lending related to data centers to assess potential risks from shifts in artificial‑intelligence (AI) sentiment.
The bank’s sale of data‑center loans has attracted attention from market participants amid a broader AI‑related sell‑off that has impacted Asian markets and led to a rise in the US dollar on safe‑haven demand. In a recent Bloomberg interview, Anneka Treon, ING’s global head of private banking, wealth management and investments, emphasized that demand for AI infrastructure remains robust and that companies continue to derive measurable value from these technologies.
Financially, ING Groep NV remains well‑capitalised. As of 5 November 2026, the share price closed at €28.72, within a 52‑week range of €20.985 to €32.395. The market capitalisation is approximately €81.03 billion, and the price‑to‑earnings ratio stands at 9.37. The bank’s diversified client base—including private clients, small businesses, large corporations, financial institutions, and governments—supports its resilience in a volatile credit environment.
The ECB’s scrutiny of data‑center lending, combined with ING’s proactive divestiture of a substantial loan portfolio, signals a cautious approach to credit exposure in a sector experiencing rapid technological change. Investors will monitor how these developments influence ING’s risk profile and earnings outlook in the coming quarters.
