Intesa Sanpaolo’s Growing Exposure to SpaceX and Renewable Energy Financing
Intesa Sanpaolo SpA, a major Italian banking group listed on the Borsa Italiana Electronic Share Market, has recently disclosed a significant investment in the private aerospace company SpaceX. According to regulatory filings submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the Italian bank held 5.66 million shares of SpaceX as of the end of June 2026, valued at approximately $966 million. This stake represents roughly 33 % of Intesa’s $2.92 billion U.S. equity portfolio and is the bank’s largest single position in that region.
The investment, first revealed in October 2023, positions Intesa among a small cohort of global investors that gained access to SpaceX before the company’s public offering in June 2026. SpaceX’s market capitalization surpassed $2 trillion shortly after the listing, while its shares had fallen about 14 % since the end of June, reducing the current value of the bank’s holding to roughly $809 million. The next two largest holdings in the U.S. portfolio are AstraZeneca Plc and Nvidia Corp., valued at approximately $274 million and $91 million, respectively.
In addition to the SpaceX allocation, Intesa has participated in a renewable‑energy financing transaction involving the Romanian solar‑storage project Econergy. The bank was one of several investors that provided €229 million in funding for a 342 MWp solar‑storage installation in Romania. The project is part of a broader European push toward clean energy infrastructure.
Intesa Sanpaolo’s financial profile remains robust. As of 16 August 2026, the share price closed at €6.885, within a 52‑week range of €4.8135 to €6.937. The bank’s market capitalization stands at €120.95 billion, and its price‑earnings ratio is 12.44. With a diversified portfolio that includes consumer credit, asset management, internet banking, and merchant banking, Intesa continues to maintain a strong presence in both domestic and international markets.
The SpaceX holding underscores the bank’s strategy of diversifying its equity exposures across high‑growth sectors, while its involvement in the Econergy project reflects a commitment to sustainable finance initiatives.
