MDA Space Ltd. Secures Major Contract with EchoStar for Groundbreaking Satellite Constellation
MDA Space Ltd., a leading technology and service provider in the global space industry, has been selected by EchoStar Corporation as the prime contractor for the world’s first open RAN broadband non-terrestrial network (NTN) low Earth orbit (LEO) direct-to-device (D2D) satellite constellation. This significant contract, announced on August 1, 2025, underscores MDA Space’s pivotal role in advancing satellite technology and connectivity.
The contract, valued at approximately US$1.3 billion (around C$1.8 billion), involves the design, manufacturing, and testing of over 100 software-defined MDA AURORAâ„¢ D2D satellites. This initiative is set to revolutionize global connectivity by enabling a wide range of services for consumers, enterprises, and governments worldwide. The constellation will ensure U.S. leadership in D2D connectivity and bolster the space economy.
EchoStar’s LEO constellation aims to provide comprehensive coverage, reaching all 350 million Americans, including Alaska and Hawaii, and extending to over 7 billion people globally. The total estimated cost of EchoStar’s LEO constellation is $5 billion, contributing to the company’s total investment in NTN satellite connectivity, which exceeds $18 billion since 2012.
